How to Answer Your Patients’ Questions About CBD.

8 Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of several chemical compounds called cannabinoids. CBD is derived from the Cannabis Sativa plant, which produces both hemp and marijuana but unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychoactive.

Is hemp-derived CBD marijuana? No.
While both hemp and marijuana come from the same plant and contain CBD, they have vastly different chemical compositions. Marijuana typically contains 5-30% THC, which is the psychoactive substance that causes the “high.” Marijuana is also not legal in all 50 states and is still considered a Schedule I drug according to the DEA. Hemp-derived CBD, on the other hand, by law has to have less than 0.3% THC in it and does not produce a “high.” Hemp-derived CBD is legal in most states following the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill.

Does all CBD contain THC? No.
While some hemp-derived CBD products do contain trace amounts of THC, our BioNan-X Nano-Amplified CBD products undergo confirmatory third-party lab testing to ensure our products are completely THC-FREE.

Will I test positive for THC?
No. Our BioNan-X Nano-Amplified CBD products are formulated with “isolated” CBD that does not contain THC or build up over time. It is important to be aware that not all CBD products are the same and it is possible to test positive for THC while using other hemp-derived products with trace amounts of THC (≤0.3%).

How much CBD should a patient take? And how often?
Because each individual is unique, a universally prescribed frequency and dosage of CBD are almost impossible. Variables to consider include type of delivery system (sublingual, inhalation, transdermal, etc.), body weight, diet, metabolism, genetics and even environment. Experts generally agree that it is best to consult with a clinician and to start with a low dose. The Annals of Medicine recently published some guidance that can be read here.

Are there any side effects of using CBD?
Compared with NSAIDs and over-the-counter medicine, CBD has fewer side effects. Side effects may include dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, lethargy, change in appetite and hyperactivity. Experts recommend starting with a low dose to assess side effects.

How does CBD work?
CBD is an “endocannabinoid.” Your body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that consists of neurotransmitters, enzymes and receptors. These are located throughout the body, mostly in the nervous system and immune system. The ECS plays a major role in many functions such as homeostasis, mood, memory, pain perception and inflammation. Cannabinoids (either naturally produced in the body or plant-based like CBD) have been shown to play a role in reducing chemicals that cause stress, anxiety, inflammation and pain.
